Top International Teams Descend on Rio for the Inaugural Red Bull Giants of Rio Relay Race

Red Bull Giants of Rio RaceSANTA MONICA, Calif. (October 21, 2024) - Swimming, mountain biking, hang gliding, running...what sounds like a nice afternoon on the beach is actually one of the toughest athletic competitions in the world. On December 5, 2024, the Red Bull Giants of Rio will pit the world's best athletes against each other and some of the harshest elements Brazil has to offer.

THE TEAMS
More than 30 nations will send one professional and one amateur team to compete in this one-day relay race. Each team will divide efforts by specialty in a race to claim victory and the $50,000 prize purse. Among the competing nations are USA, Brazil, Italy, Germany and Austria.

The US teams are among the most decorated and highly-regarded athletes in the competition. The US professional team is comprised of 2024 Olympic silver medalist, Chad Carvin (swim); the highest ranked American man on the World Cup Cross-Country circuit, Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski (MTB); U.S.

National Hang Gliding Champion; Curt Warren (fly); and two-time Iron Man Champion, Tim Deboom (run).

The US amateur team was selected via a series of qualifying events, or "fly to" competitions in each discipline. The team includes Alex Kostich (swim) ; Jay Henry (bike); Dustin Martin (fly); and Jon Clark (run). Detailed athlete bios and photos can be viewed at www.giantsofrio.com

THE COURSE
The relentless Red Bull Giants of Rio track traverses the most celebrated locations in Rio de Janeiro. The race begins as swimmers cliff jump into the Atlantic Ocean to tackle raucous waves for a 4-kilometer beach break swim. Once the swimmers reach the shoreline, the mountain bikers begin their 45-kilometer cross-country trek snaking through the narrow streets of historic Rio, climbing up the Corcovado to the world-famous Jesus statue, descending through the jungles of Tijuca National Park then up to the neighboring peak of the 842-meter Pedra Bonita Mountain. From there, the hang gliders will speed through the skies 696 meters above sea level before landing on the beach of Impanema. The last leg of the race is a grueling 15-kilometer run through sand and concrete until runners cross the finish line at the famous Copacabana Beach.
